Essay test.
New Media affects many different areas:
1. At work maximizing efficiency and convenience
2. in the area of entertainment
3. Social networking and relationships”
- Transcends the physical/geographical boundaries
- Through personal or group blogs, Myspace, Facebook, MSN chats
- Extension of one’s circle through Internet chats and even online dating (getting more common) “2nd life”: cyber world – sued for raping cyber world character?
- Online interest groups, communities
- Reiteration: They do change our lives for the better as they transform our conventional ways of social interaction and widen our social networking
4. Disseminating and receiving new information
- Radically transform the entire landscape of new industry
- Immediacy of the dissemination of news information
- Citizen journalism – decentralisation of journalistic authority
- Digital newspapers, interactive media, Live RSS news feeds, youtube.com, news blogs/forums, where readers and journalists can extend their discussion of news.
5. New media and scoio-political movements
- As a form of socio-political commentary- Yangon university students: invested in new media- to report and rally for support.
- Democratisation of the media (opened up, cannot be controlled by governments due to the borderless nature of interent) – making my voice heard – giving a greater alternative voice to the common people
- A powerful social platform for greater freedom of speech
Negative impacts on our lives – New media can be a Pandora’s box
Greater security threats online – online fraud, cyber hacking, online security threats, cyber-crimes
intellectual property issues – illegal downloading, cut and paste plagiarism
unethical online postings and increasing loss of privacy – aaonymous reporting/postings – cyber bullying, posting of nude photos – sensationalized / unethical reporting / postings (eg. celebrity)– loss of privacy
abuse of freedom of speech on the media – sensitive political and religious contents eg the anti-muslim video on youtube – fitna – censorships and regulations are questionable
brings about a new set of problems.
Media …… is/are? Has/have?
Is: treating media as one whole entity
Are: taking into account of different parts of media, eg tv.
Follow the qn (convention) : have, so use plural.
END.
